Theme 3

Sensors and Data Collection

Introduction

This theme promotes the co-design of robust, affordable sensors tailored for under-instrumented environments in the Global South. It supports data acquisition for real-time simulation and model calibration in collaboration with local FabLabs and living labs.

Scientific Issues & Challenges

– Develop open-source, frugal, repairable sensors (e.g., QameleO, Waqatali).

– Ensure sustainable deployment strategies respecting local climates and infrastructures.

– Embed AI directly into sensors for on-site data filtering and real-time feedback loops.

Applications

  • Air & Water

Urban air pollution monitoring (HoanKiemAir), water quality stations (Lac de Guiers).

  • Irrigation

Smart irrigation and water reuse systems co-developed with farmers.

  • Bio-signals

Portable ECG acquisition in underserved areas.

  • Language

Tone-detecting sensors for speech technologies.

Research Activities & Animations

– Tutorials and open-access training videos.

– Yearly seminars and hackathons with FabLab partners (e.g., Dakar, Benin).

– Participatory deployment in citizen-driven contexts.

Agent-Based Mathematical and Computer Modeling

Our agent-based modeling simulates social, economic, and environmental scenarios, aiding policymakers in urban planning and public health by predicting outcomes and epidemic spread.

Theme 2

Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning

AI and deep learning analyze large datasets to reveal patterns and support sustainable development, using satellite imagery for climate impact predictions and solutions in health and urban planning.

Theme 3

Sensors and Data Collection

Our sensor networks enable real-time monitoring of critical environmental metrics, such as air quality and water resources, throughout Southeast Asia. This data empowers researchers and communities to make better-informed decisions for a sustainable future.
